Hilly Kristal, owner and founder of CBGB, writes a brief history of the club that for the past thirty five years has become synonymous with underground music. CBGB.com presents this history as it is written in sequential installments.

Installment Vol.3

Rock bands from all over the country started to call for bookings. The Wherewolves were the first band that I can remember from Texas. They were real hard rock with a punk attitude and a glam look. There was Alex Chilton from Memphis, The Quinn Bothers from Ohio, Joe and Blake from Kansas City, as well as many bands from Boston including Willie Loco Alexander, Captain Swing with Orr and Ocasek (who had played for me before as Milkwood) who were soon to change their band name to The Cars. Some of the other New York based bands of note were Wayne County who latter became Jane County, Eric Emerson and the Magic Tramps, and Queen Elizabeth Dorian Zero- most of which were kind of glam punk.

The music industry started to come down to the club more and more. Seymour Stein of Sire Records really had an ear for what was happening and was the most adventurous of the industry in signing new artists and delivering this new music to the public. When Stein signed The Ramones, he and Danny Fields (Ramones manager) brought them to the U.K. to tour upon the release of their first record.
