Hilly Kristal, owner and founder of CBGB, writes a brief history of the club that for the past twenty seven years has become synonymous with underground music. CBGB.com presents this history as it is written in sequential installments.

Installment Vol.3

They woke up the BRITS! The British loved the Ramones and rediscovered their own bands, like the Sex Pistols, The Adverts, The Damned, etc. etc. etc. There were a whole lot of these kind of bands already playing in the pubs. The Ramones acted as a wakeup call to the British press and music industry, saying we're doing our thing our way with high energy, and full of attitude. The British pushed it even further than we did in the U.S. They also made a punk fashion statement. Where we had holes in our clothing and used safety pins as buttons to hold things together, the British went even further with hair styles such as mohawks, all kinds of hair color, wigs,. and razor blades as ear rings. They came up with a whole slew of punk decor.(like what the company MANIC PANIC is famous for now). The whole punk movement really came alive in the U.K. Because we had a recession during the seventies in this country, the kids were in need of a little recognition. They needed to rebel and have their say like in every other generation. The British kids had more of a need. Many were living on the dole. They felt they had no future and struck out even more against the establishment. On the other hand we in this country had some wonderfully creative bands.

We had less anger and MUCH MORE JOY!!
