| Hilly Kristal, owner and founder of CBGB, writes a brief history of the club that for the past thirty five years has become synonymous with underground music. CBGB.com presents this history as it is written in sequential installments. | ------------------------------ | ||
| Installment Vol.5 Page 7 My favorite band was The Shirts, (pronounced “Shoits”) from Brooklyn, N.Y. They were a six piece punky pop rock band with wonderfully talented and creative musicians with an irrepressibly magnetic centerpiece in lead singer Annie Golden. So back to the recording as a whole, which has through the years been known as “Live at CBGB’s Double Album Vol. 1" After recording and mixing the Album, we manufactured between 7 and 8 thousand copies for press, promo, and distribution. Of course we had a big record release party here at CBGB, and all the bands performed. A lot of the reviews were great and some were mediocre; especially some of the New York press. The music press around the country gave us exceptional reviews as did the foreign press. We received air-play through out the USA on the more adventurous commercial radio stations as well as a lot of college radio. WNEW fm in NYC gave us substantial air play, with Vin Scelsa leading the DJs. Meg Griffin was very supportive from her Westchester station as was Dennis McNamara at WLIR fm. |
